In the US, our collective definition of an “adult” differs from beliefs of a hundred years ago. Recent decades have perhaps unintentionally encouraged legal adults to remain adolescent in many ways—remaining financially dependent on their parents even after receiving a four-year college degree. I’d like to contribute to reversing the trend by providing resources for parents and students regarding both the parent child contract and your college budget.

High School students, new high school graduates, and even young adults sometimes get frustrated at not being treated like an adult. This tool draws from academic research. Sometimes the analysis sounds kind of harsh. Still it can be used to point out some reasons. You should know in advance the results truly do sound harsh sometimes for some people. It may seem like the tool is making a value judgment. In a way, it does. But that's not the intention. It is meant to provide some self-assessment and reflection. Absolutely cultural bias is reflected in the tool. It is not meant to offend, just state what we probably already feel and assist you, or your college student in the decision making process.
Are You An Adult is a free download. This tool is created using Microsoft (c) Office Excel 2003. Use the tool to "self-evaluate" whether you would be "assumed to be" and "perceived to be" an adult by other adults. This tool is based on academic research related to characteristics typically considered to be "adult-like" in the US culture. It is not intended to make value-judgments, rather to assist individuals in identifying potential areas, improve college student decision making, and notice adjustments to be made in their lives.
